“PipeDiver” for Water Pipe Inspection

Commissioned and funded by Sustainable Development Technology Canada, and led by The Pressure Pipe Inspection Company, InvoDane along with five other organizations is part of a consortium that is developing “PipeDiver,” a robotic Remote Field Eddy Current/Transformer Coupling (RFEC/TC) device that inspects 16 to 60-inch diameter pre-stressed cylindrical concrete pipe (PCCP) used for water transmission.

The new device will enable the identification of distressed pipe, allowing water utilities to minimize operational risks, optimize their investment, and extend the safe and economic life of their pipelines – saving themselves and taxpayers millions of dollars. Canada’s PCCP infrastructure is ageing and is starting to decay. While the risk of pipe failure is low, failures can be catastrophic. Such failures result in interruptions to the water supply as well as damage to adjacent pipes and infrastructure.
